Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Medical Services Union (SMSU) reiterated that whatever initiatives taken by it to alleviate the stressful working environment following the closure of Queen Elizabeth Hospital's (QEH) main tower block are in the interests of members as well as affected healthcare workers there.
There is no hidden agenda nor any intention to differ from any decision or proposal made by the Government or any other party, he said in a statement Thursday.
"We welcome the effort made both at the state and federal levels but an effective solution to this six-month problem should be finalised to overcome the increasing workload and stressful working conditions both at the QEH and all the other health facilities to which several of the health services were transferred to," said President, Maiman Muntial.
The much affected services are the ICU, CCU and operating theatres, he added.
Maiman said the union's initiatives to assist the Sabah Health Department are made with no other intentions other than to ensure healthcare workers are able to provide an effective delivery system for the interest of the public.
He said acting on the requests by members working at QEH they requested the assistance of Cuepacs and for the President and its exco members to come down to the ground to see for themselves the workplace conditions.
Cuepacs President Haji Omar Osman and his deputy Husain Mat Yasin, along with SMSU's exco officials made a site visit to Likas Hospital, SMC Damai and QEH on Wednesday to listen to the workers' concerns and worries over the uncertainty of their workplace, he said.
"The union is very grateful to Sabah Health Department especially its Director Dr Haji Marzukhi Md Isa for giving its assistance that the department is with the workers in ensuring the best care during this trying time," he said.
He said this was clearly spelt out during a briefing session given by QEH Director Dr Zuraidah Ahmad Babji for Cuepacs, SMSU officials and the affected QEH healthcare workers.
"The union and CUEPACS have no specific proposal for the Health Ministry to adopt with regards to the acquiring of the new facility but after having listened to the briefing made by the health authorities the union is of the stand that SMC remains the best practical and effective option for the Ministry to seriously consider," he said.
He said the other important and crucial factor would be the setting up of the cardio-thoracic centre of which IJN is ever ready to function, a facility which "we are in dire need for the rakyat in Sabah."
Besides the full support team for this facility has already undergone intensive training through attachments in Peninsula Malaysia and are ready to perform, he said.
"And certainly we Sabahans look forward to the realisation of having a full-pledged hospital after having tasted 50 years of independence.
The Federal Government should have no problem in making this dream come true for Sabahans since the Sabah State Government has pledged its full commitment and support towards acquiring the new site," he said.
