PORT DICKSON: About five per cent of civil servants have frequently stayed away from work and there are also those who have been absent for up to three months.
Cuepacs secretary-general Ahmad Shah Mohd Zin said most of them were from the support group two (grade 1-17).This is lowest rung of the civil service and the workers include sweepers and gardeners.Ahmad Shah said this problem was brought to the attention of Cuepacs, the umbrella body for civil service unions, at a meeting with ministries and goverment departments which had sought the union's assistance to deal with the problem. "We have no problem speaking to the workers, but we feel it would be better for the ministries and departments concerned to have a seminar, especially for this target group.
"Workers in this group only need to pass their Form Three and are not exposed to or aware of certain work ethics and regulations," he said after the opening of the Armed Forces General Workers Union meeting here yesterday. The meeting was opened by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
