ONE tends to agree with the Prime Minister that Cuepacs should not demand year-end bonuses as our economy has not fully recovered yet (The Star, Nov 5).
It is morally wrong to reward government servants with year-end bonuses which will only fuel inflation, affecting other strata of society in the process.
Civil servants should look at the big picture. Being in government service can be likened to “iron rice bowls” situations where job security is guaranteed until retirement. Pensions are paid to retirees to make ends meet in their golden years.
Private sectors might pay more than government service but if the companies that you work with go bust, you are out of work. It is also common to hear of retrenchment exercises and paycuts when business is not good during a recession.
Private sector workers can only depend on their EPF savings to pay their bills after they retire. They have to fork out for medical bills, unlike retired government servants and their dependants who are given free hospital treatment for life.
Rather than pushing for year-end bonuses, civil servants should work hand-in-hand with the private sector to make our economy moving again.
