KUALA LUMPUR Nov 4 — Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) hopes the government will extend the Work from Home Programme for civil servants in various fields, pioneered by the Works Ministry, should the outcome be positive.
Its president Omar Osman said the programme was seen as being able to reduce stress, increase productivity and help solve parking woes faced by many government departments and agencies.
"It is a safe way of releasing stress and tension. They can also be contacted anytime at home,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
In relation to that, he lauded the Public Works Department”s initiative to kick-start a three-month Home Working Programme starting Jan 1, that involves 35 draughtsman, as announced by Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor today.
"This is a wise move and for Cuepacs, this is a trial at the agency-level.
If things go well, Cuepacs will ask for it to be extended to other ministries, especially to female civil servants,” he said.
In his announcement, Shaziman today said that selected draughtsman will go through a three-month trial period before the government decides whether or not to continue the programme.
The programme to commence from Jan 1 to March 2010, will be ceased if productivity does not increase.
The programme, mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, is expected to help the government, especially the Works Ministry, to handle congestion at workplace and indirectly reduce the burden on workers in terms of petrol and toll costs, and also allow women to spend more time with their families.
According to Shaziman, such programmes have been implemented by companies worldwide and have proven to increase productivity.
