KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The
government will study the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public
and Civil Services (Cuepacs)'s suggestion that the existing Sedition Act
is maintained for the sake of peace in the country.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri said if it
was deemed the best suggestion for all quarters, the government could
look at it from the perspective of merely improving on the current act.
"Insya Allah, we will study the suggestion," she said in an entry in her Facebook account today.
She said the government welcomed suggestions from all parties but all
rights that were enshrined in the Federal Constitution would be
retained.
At the same time, the government would also continue research to
improve existing laws to address situations, where there were people
insulting the royal institution and each other in terms of race and
religion.
Last Saturday, Cuepacs president Azih Muda was reported to have said
that the act should be repealed and the move could discourage any
undesired matters from happening, thus ensuring the country's security
and people's welfare.
