SEREMBAN: Cuepacs, the umbrella body of public sector workers' unions, has urged the state government to postpone a plan to privatise or corporatise the State Water Supply Department (JBANS) from Dec 1 to Dec 31.
Its president, Omar Osman, said this was necessary as many JBANS staff still did not understand the options available to them.He said many workers in the department did not even understand the difference between privatisation and corporatisation and there were other issues which needed to be clarified."Several employees, through their unions, had said that they were made to understand from briefings given by the state government and JBANS officials that the department would be privatised, while Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had told me that it would only be corporatised."There is a lot of confusion and some terms such as on salary and allowances are not very favourable," Omar said after a briefing and dialogue session with JBANS officials here yesterday.
He said Cuepacs and the Negri Sembilan Civil Servants Union would meet Mohamad soon to get a clearer picture on the matter and to discuss better packages and options for the employees.Omar said the employees were not rejecting the proposal but were unhappy over certain matters."Some had claimed that they were being pressured to sign the option and this has caused a lot of dissatisfaction."Omar said it would be better for the workers if JBANS was corporatised and not privatised."We will be having another briefing with JBANS on Nov 4 and we hope to convey our side of the story and seek some solution. "We do not want any JBANS employee to feel victimised, especially when some have served the department for more than 20 years."
