SEREMBAN: The State Water Supply Department (JBANS) would be corporatised, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
His announcement confirmed rumours that water supply would be privatised. He said department staff would be briefed today about the new system which would be implemented on Jan 1 next year.In a New Straits Times report yesterday, the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs), the umbrella body of public sector workers' unions, urged the government to postpone the plan as many workers were unsure of the options available to them. Its president, Omar Osman, said several employees, through their unions, had voiced their confusion over the salary and allowances offered under corporatisation.
"I was informed that almost all the staff would get a 17 per cent increase in their basic salary," he said after chairing the state executive council meeting at Wisma Negeri, here yesterday.Omar also said that from Jan 1 next year, the department would be known as Syarikat Air Negeri Sembilan (SANS)."One of the reasons we did not privatise the department previously was because the party that wanted to take over had wanted to raise the water tariff."SANS was created to avoid any increase in water tariffs in the next three years."He said SANS would only recognise basic salaries and allowances gazetted by the Water Supply Depatment. He added that SANS would be able to employ staff to fill about 300 vacancies which were frozen under the department.Mohamad said the state government would receive between RM15 million and RM20 milllion per annum from water royalty and raw water after five years.
