KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- The government has accepted Cuepacs' appeal and extended the services of "a few hundred" contract officers for another year, its secretary-general, Ahmad Shah Mohd Zin said Wednesday.
He told Bernama that some of these officers were on contract for over 20 years and were employed on a year-to-year basis.
"While we appreciate the government's gesture in renewing their contract, we would urge that these officers be absorbed into the permanent establishment," he said.
There were an estimated 50,000 officers on contract serving the government in various departments, local authorities and statutory bodies.
He said Cuepacs was still discussing with the Public Service Department (PSD) to find out how best this issue of contract officers could be amicably resolved.
Meanwhile, a PSD spokesman said the contract officers problem was an ongoing issue which was being addressed by the department.
"We are constantly monitoring the situation as some of the officers were employed on a project-to-project basis," he said
