KUCHING: The new price of petrol and diesel that was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday will have a big impact on the people.
While some irresponsible eateries will increase the price of food and drinks, other traders will also increase the price of essential items. Trade enforcement officers and other relevant agencies will be working extra hard to see to it that no one increase prices according to their fancy.
President of Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) William Ghani Bina said even before the latest increase, prices of goods in Sabah and Sarawak were already very high.
“With the increase in fuel price, the government should take appropriate actions to lessen the burden of the people,” said Ghani, who is also the state Cuepacs chairman (Congress of Union of employees in the public service).
He said that STU, on its part, would help to monitor the prices of goods and give feedback to the relevant authorities.
He said even though the price of petrol was beyond the control of any government in the world, the government had to decide what action to take for the interest of the people.
Ghani, who is also chairman of Sabah-Sarawak Joint Committee Teachers Union pointed out that the government should look at alternative ways to lessen the burden of the rural people, who would be the hardest hit by the latest (price) increase.
He also suggested that the government devised special subsidy scheme for government officers, who had little choice but to drive quite a distance every single day to work.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, meanwhile said the people should accept the reality that the government had no choice, but to increase the petrol prices due to the spiralling price of the commodity in the global market.
Daud, who is also Assistant Minister of Industrial Development and Tupong assemblyman, said the price of petrol in Malaysia was still low, compared to some countries.
“For the lower income group of people, I believe the government has some mechanism to lessen their burden,” he said.
Sadong Jaya MP Nancy Shukri, also said the price hike of petrol and diesel would have big impact on the rural people, and that the government had to look for solution to help them.
She however said the increase was beyond the control of the (Malaysian) government or any government in the world for that matter, due to the global trend.
