PETALING JAYA (Sept 23, 2012): The
Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services
(Cuepacs) has requested for income tax reduction for civil servants
earning below RM100,000 annually. Its secretary-general Loke Yim Pheng in a statement on Saturday said
the government should relieve civil servants from the burden of high
taxes.
"Income tax deductions can go as high as RM600 to RM1,000. Based on
feedback we've received, civil servants want the government to reduce
their income tax."Loke said even with the recent salary increase of up to 13%, the
higher taxes render the increase negligible. "This is a big burden to
civil servants, so much so that it feels that there is no increase."Loke also said the government should increase the housing allowance
for civil servants as rising property prices have led to many not being
able to afford houses in the urban areas. She also hinted at Cuepacs' demands for 2013 Budget, asking that some
100,000 government servants who have reached their maximum salaries be
given an increase.
Cuepacs had on Sept 19 presented a six-point budget wishlist, which
includes a two-month bonus for its members and improvements to the
Malaysian Remuneration System. Its president Datuk Omar Osman reportedly said Cuepacs wished for
more affordable houses priced between RM60,000 and RM150,000 in urban
areas, targeted for members who earn RM3,000 and below a month.
He had also called for the cost of living allowance of RM180 monthly
to be increased to reflect current needs, as well as the upgrade of
existing government quarters, some of which have only one bedroom.
