MELAKA, April 11 (Bernama) -- Cuepacs will meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak soon to make proposals to improve the civil service and improve the welfare of civil servants.Its president Omar Osman said a letter seeking a meeting with Najib had been sent and that he was still waiting for a reply.The proposals were on the competency assessment test (PTK), privatisation of the public sector, review of medical facilities for civil servants and retirees, cost of living allowance (COLA) and the retrenchment of contract staff," he said after chairing a Cuepacs council special meeting here Saturday.Omar said about 3,000 contract staff had been retrenched nationwide since Jan last year due to the economic slowdown.T
he civil service has about 50,000 contract staff of which 20,000 are under the Public Service Department (JPA) and the Public Service Commission (SPA) and another 30,000 are under ministries, state governments and agencies."Contract staff appointed by JPA and SPA have no problems as their contracts are renewed but this is not the case for those appointed by ministries, state governments and agencies."Omar said heads of departments and agencies often cite lack of budget, poor performance and health as reasons for non-renewal of contracts."Lack of budget, poor performance and health are answers that we cannot accept. Datuk Seri Najib said when presenting the mini budget that all contract staff will not be retrenched," he added.-- BERNAMA
