PUTRAJAYA: The Government has to look into the decision by the Selangor state government to allow its female civil servants to take up to 90 days maternity leave, said Public Services Department director-general Tan Sri Ismail Adam.
“There may be legal implication to the pension payment,” he said when commenting on the Selangor government’s decision to allow its female civil servants to take a maximum of 90 days maternity leave starting this year.
Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim also announced that husbands whose wives gave birth would also enjoy a 14-day paternity leave, up from a week previously.
Female staff whose husbands pass away will also get 30 days’ leave.
Cuepacs president Omar Osman, however, welcomed the Selangor government’s move, saying that it was in line with the requirement set by the International Labour Organisation.
“We hope the Federal Government would also follow suit and increase maternity leave for female civil servants throughout the country to 84 days or 90 days,” he said.
He said the government’s decision to slash the number of leave days for those joining the civil service from Jan 1 to 25 days’ leave regardless of their tenure had affected women.
“The previous entitlement of 60 days’ leave may be enough for some people but there are also mothers who need extra days to attend to a sick child and emergency matters,” he said.
He said the Government had agreed to increase maternity leave for civil servants to 84 days when Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was the Women, Family and Community Development Minister.
“We hope that the Government can materialise its promise as soon as possible,” he said.
