GEORGE TOWN: Cuepacs is seeking a meeting with state development officer Nik Ali Mat Yunus, who has become the country’s most conspicuous civil servant since he lashed out at Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng at a press conference organised by Umno.
The umbrella union for public servants is keen to find out why the state development officer chose to air his grievances through the media.
Cuepacs president Omar Osman said today it disturbed him that politicians were now openly criticising civil servants instead of using the discreet channels available to do so.
He said politicians from both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional were guilty of being unfair to civil servants.
"We should not treat civil staffers as slaves,” he said. “Treat them as partners in nation building. Engage them and use the proper forums."
Omar said civil servants in Pakatan and some BN states had been complaining to Cuepacs over politicians’ lack of regard for their role in serving the public.
Former Cuepacs president N Siva Subramaniam, who is now an adviser to the union, said this was the first time he had seen such an open quarrel between a federal officer and the chief executive of a state.
Siva has been involved in union affairs for more than 30 years.
However, he added, he was once caught in a situation that was nearly as bad. Twenty-five years ago, when he was the secretary-general for the National Union of the Teaching Profession, MIC President S Samy Vellu publicly rebuked him for his stand against relocating some Tamil schools.
"Samy Vellu allegedly told the teachers to remove me as the secretary-general."
Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, who was then the education minister, came to his defence, he said.
Siva called on both politicians and bureaucrats to use “proper channels” to resolve their differences. “Fighting it out through the media is just not right,” he said.
"In the case of Lim and Nik Ali, both parties are wrong for using the media. And two wrongs do not make a right."

Salam,n salam satu Malaysia..i dont see any conspicuos in tihs matter at all,well i do agree with what Nik Ali did..he has the right to defend his dignity..i assume Cuepacs should do some drastic outcome on this, what we call the fenomena of Politician criticising we the Civil Servants lately..dont see any little Napoleon around...

Dont u think that he or she has the right to express what ever he or she thinks..in what ever language,plse do understands peoples right..hopfully u could surf our PM's blog..will do u good,n justify..SOFT HEARTED.
