CUEPACS: CONCERN OVER WELFARE OF WORKERS ABSORBED INTO PRIVATISED FIRMS

ALOR SETAR: Cuepacs wants the Federal Government to review the move to privatise solid waste management at all local authorities.
The congress is concerned about the welfare of the workers if they are absorbed into the companies that take over the services when privatisation takes effect in October.
Cuepacs president Omar Osman said the Government must ensure that all garbage collection workers remain under the local governments.
‘‘We welcome the Government’s plan to privatise solid waste management but it must consider the impact on the workers if they are forced to join the private companies.
“Cuepacs wants the workers to continue to enjoy the benefits they receive now under the local government such as their pension and bonuses,” he said after meeting with some 400 garbage collection workers in Kedah yesterday.
The workers had assembled here to underline their concerns about the privatisation exercise. There are a total of 25,000 unionised garbage collection workers nationwide, 5,000 of them in Kedah.
Omar said Cuepacs hoped to meet with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak or his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to discuss the matter before the congress’ annual meeting on June 27 in Perak.
He added that the congress would embark on a nationwide tour to meet garbage collectors to try and allay their concerns.
