45,000 GOVT CONTRACT STAFF IN A SPOT WORK STATUS

MALACCA: About 45,000 people working five- to 10-year contracts in government service were disappointed to learn they will not be absorbed as permanent staff.
Their status has been changed to part-time workers. Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Omar Osman said the contract staff put in e the same effort as permanent staff. He said Cuepacs had received complaints from contract government employees about the change in their status."It has happened in every agency, government department, ministry and statutory body. I have even received reports that several contract staff were not paid their wages." "Cuepacs worries that these employees will eventually lose their jobs to be replaced by new and younger contract staff," he said before a talk on Establishing Cuepacs Management, in conjunction with the national-level Cuepacs leadership seminar yesterday.
"Most are young when they begin serving. We're worried that if they work for years without permanent status, when they get older they will be moved to part-time status and left to count the days before being asked to leave." Cuepacs will meet with the Public Service Department director-general on July 29 to discuss the issue, he added. Omar also said Cuepacs was still waiting for Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan's decision on the suggestion to adjust the cost of living allowance (Cola) for civil servants, and Cola payments to public sector staff who receive the Federal Incentive Payment.
