CUEPACS CALLS FOR SPECIAL SCHEME FOR LOCAL MAIDS

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 (Bernama) -- Cuepacs on Monday urged the government to change the designation of maids to domestic management assistants and create a special scheme for local maids which offered attractive salary structure and other benefits.Cuepacs president Omar Osman said the move was to attract the locals to join the sector. He said the scheme must include contributions to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Social Security Organisation and the provision of the Cost of Living Allowance (Cola).Cuepacs also called on the Human Resources Ministry to set up a special agency to take care of the welfare of this group."I remember in the 70s where most of the maids were locals because at the time there were no big factories."Once these factories existed many did not want to work as maids anymore because the job did not offer security compared to working in factories where they were offered EPF contributions, compensation and other allowances," he told Bernama Monday. He said that although it would be difficult to standardise the salary of maids, as those working in a small household might have less tasks to complete compared to those in a larger household, Cuepacs estimated that the minimum salary for local maids would be about RM650.Omar said the designation should also be changed to overcome the perception that the sector was a second class profession. He said the government should also ease up requirements for those who want to apply for the job."There is no need for them to have a PMR (Penilaian Menengah Rendah) or SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) qualification. It is enough if they can read and know about housekeeping."-- BERNAMA
