SIBU (June 9): The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services Malaysia (Cuepacs) Sarawak has called on the government to expedite Covid-19 vaccination for civil servants.

Chairman Omar Bahrain Unin said the early vaccination of civil servants, who form the backbone of the country’s administration, would enable them to play their roles in the country’s economic recovery agenda.

“Our proposal is not meant to sideline other targeted groups from early vaccination but we just hope the civil servants will be vaccinated early so that they can contribute to their roles in society more effectively,” he said in a media statement.

Omar, who is also Sarawak Medical Union Services deputy president, opined vaccination would certainly help reduce problems for civil servants in their respective fields.

He said as most civil servants have to provide face to face services to the people, vaccination would also help reduce the risk of getting infected.

Omar said Cuepacs Sarawak also supported the early vaccination of teachers because the nature of their jobs involves high risk exposure when in school.

“This is especially so when the school classes are expected to start in July,” he added.

He said Cuepacs also agreed for all assets from government departments and agencies to be mobilised to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

He explained this included channeling department vehicles, desks, chairs, and tents to quarantine centres, vaccination centres, district Covid-19 operations rooms, health clinics, and Covid-19 Assessment Centre (CAC) so that the work at the facilities could be further streamlined.

“These matters need to be decided immediately to ensure success in the fight against Covid-19,” he added.
