CUEPACS TO GET REPLY ON MAY 10

From The Star Newspaper

JOHOR BARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is likely to announce the Government’s response to Cuepacs’ demands during the civil service Labour Day celebration slated for May 10 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr. S Subramaniam said this at a press conference after attending the Labour Day celebration organised by the Customs Officers Union, an affiliate of Cuepacs, here yesterday.
However, he could not say which of the demands the Government had agreed to fulfil.
Cuepacs, the umbrella union for civil servants, wants among others, pensions to be based on the actual years of service, retirement age extended from 56 to 60, the Efficiency Level Test (PTK) abolished, critical allowances for civil servants in Support Group II reinstated and an increase in housing allowance.
On another matter, Dr Subramaniam said the ministry would conduct safety audits on all public sector workplaces to ensure a safe environment for workers.
He said he had ordered the ministry’s Health and Safety Department to conduct the audit to make sure employers were meeting the necessary safety requirements.
“Every field in the sector has different safety requirements,” he said.
He also said he and other ministry officers would visit several estates nationwide to ensure employers looked after the welfare of their foreign workers.
“The visits, starting in Johor, are aimed at spreading awareness on ensuring that foreign workers’ welfare are taken care of.
“Employers at the estates must buck up and provide the necessary facilities for workers,” he said, adding that he would meet with Malayan Agricultural Producers Association in two weeks to discuss foreign workers’ welfare.
