Cuepacs urges govt to lighten financial burden of public sector workers
KUALA LUMPUR: Cuepacs will be submitting a number of proposals, including asking the government to reduce the interest rates on housing and car loans to help lighten the financial burden of public sector employees.
Its president Omar Osman said Cuepacs would not focus too much on the issue of pay rise but on the allowances and other benefits enjoyed by civil servants instead.
“Other than asking for a review of the Cost of Living Allowance (Cola), we are urging that the four per cent interest on housing loans be reduced to one per cent or abolished altogether and the six per cent interest on vehicle loans reduced to three per cent.”
Omar was speaking to reporters after closing an occupational health and safety workshop organised by the Peninsular Malaysia Road Transport Officers Union here yesterday.
Cuepacs is also asking the government to raise the taxable monthly income from RM2,500 to RM3,500.
Omar said based on the current situation, Cuepacs felt that the government should temporarily freeze the transfer of civil servants to save costs.
He said the request for honorarium for civil servants and review of their travelling and accommodation allowances would be discussed at a meeting with the Malaysian Trades Union Congress on June 28.
On another development, he said from the feedback received, Cuepacs members generally disagreed to the proposed twice monthly payment of salary .
However, he added, Cuepacs would only make a stand on this after the meeting with MTUC.
In view of the current situation, Omar also urged the department heads or directors in the public sector to allow their staff to do part-time work as soon as possible on the condition that the work could start at 6pm and end by midnight.
