POH: The National Minimum Wage Consultative Council Act will be tabled at the next Dewan Rakyat sitting, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam
He said the council would coordinate the salaries of workers in the private sector once the Act was enforced.
“It will make the necessary announcements to ensure the salaries of those in the private sector are in tandem with the cost of living,” he told reporters at the Workers Day celebration organised by Cuepacs at Stadium Indera Mulia here yesterday.
Dr Subramaniam said the council would be empowered to determine salaries in the private sector.
“It will also have the power to ensure that its decisions are adhered to by the private sector,” he said.
In his speech, Dr Subramaniam described the Act as the Govern-ment's gift to employees in the private sector.
Cuepacs president Datuk Omar Osman expressed the hope that the Government would carry out salary adjustments for civil servants this year.
He said the union had also proposed that the cost of living allowance for all civil servants be adjusted to RM300 per month and housing allowance for government employees in Grades 40 and below be increased to RM350 per month from the current RM180.
”If there is any house for rental at RM180, Cuepacs will rent all these houses,” he quipped.
In GEORGE TOWN, the Penang MTUC claimed that wages had remained low although the state had chalked up a record RM12.2bil in foreign direct investments last year.
Its secretary K. Veeriah said there was also a lack of high-paying “quality” jobs in the state.
He claimed that some employers at the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Trade Zone were still offering wages as low as RM500 to production workers “which was lower than the cost of living.”
He said MTUC would continue to champion for a minimum wage of RM900 plus RM300 as cost of living allowance.
